What Type of Solar Water Heater Is Right for You?

The types of solar water heaters include:
- Active: An active system uses an electric pump to circulate the heat-transfer fluid. It is slightly more expensive but it is much more efficient, the storage tanks can be placed indoors so as to reduce heat loss, and you have an increased amount of control over the system.
- Passive: A passive system uses no pump but relies on heat-driven convection or heat pipes to circulate fluid through the system. It costs less and there is little maintenance needed, but it has less efficiency and overheating and freezing are concerns when temperatures are extreme.
- Open loop/direct: An open-loop/direct system circulates the water through a collector. It is less expensive but it offers little to no overheat protection, little to no freeze protection, and the collectors may accumulate scale in areas with hard water. Fixes to these issues are available but will incur additional costs.
- Closed loop/indirect: A closed-loop/indirect system uses a heat-transfer fluid such as water or diluted anti-freeze to collect heat in addition to a heat exchanger to transfer the heat to the water. It is slightly more expensive but does offer protection against freezing and overheating.
